July 2012: Tips, eNews & More!

Here is the weather that many around our office have been waiting for!
While we encourage you to get outside and enjoy these gorgeous days, we also remind you to wear sunscreen and stretch before any activity. If your job finds you at a desk for the majority of the day take five minutes today and search for 'stretches you can do at your desk'. Stretching will improve your flexibility and circulation as well as alleviate some of your daily stress.

BBQ season is well underway, and social network photo albums are filling up with smiling faces. If you want to bring out the best in your smile for the summer, request an appointment today. There are still plenty of photo opportunities ahead!

For the Health of it!
While being active, wearing sunscreen, and staying hydrated are important summer tips, we would like to add one more to your summer mantra. 'Think before you drink!' In our case we are talking about the consumption of 'sugary drinks' such as sodas, colas and juice 'cocktails'. If you enjoy the occasional 'sugary drink', here are some tips to limit the damage to your teeth:

  • Try the sugar free versions (although they still damage tooth enamel).
  • Drink your 'sugary drink' during a meal.
  • Drink through a straw to minimize contact with teeth.
  • When you are finished, rinse your mouth, then follow up with a tall glass of water.
  • Most importantly, limit your 'sugary drink' consumption.
Remember that once it passes through your teeth, the rest of your body has to deal with it and that's a whole other story.

Have a great month,

Dr. Nick Babatsikos and Team

Energy Drinks and Your Oral Health

Energy drinks are a rapidly growing industry with new products popping up seemingly daily. Many of us have come to rely on them for an extra boost during the day. However these drinks can be very damaging to tooth enamel due to their ability to breakdown calcium which is critical for strengthening teeth and preventing gum disease.

Why are energy drinks a problem for teeth?
Energy drinks contain large amounts corrosive acids. These acids leech calcium and phosphorous out of you tooth's enamel. Enamel is the cover that protects the visible part of your teeth. Once you enamel is gone it is gone forever! These problems are heightened for teens and adolescents because their teeth are not fully hardened and therefore not as resistant to these acid attacks.

Money Matters brought to you by our very own seasoned expert Maria Tsiaousidis.

Greater Toronto REALTORS® reported 9,422 home sales through the TorontoMLS system in June 2012. The number of transactions was down by 5.4 per cent in comparison to June 2011. The year-over-year decline was largest in the City of Toronto, where sales were down by 13 per cent compared to June 2011. Sales in the rest of the Toronto Real Estate Board (TREB) market area were comparable to a year ago. The average selling price in June was $508,622 – up by 7.3 per cent compared to June 2011.

"Buyers continue to face the substantial upfront cost associated with the City of Toronto's unfair Land Transfer Tax," said TREB President Ann Hannah. "Recent polling by TREB suggests that many households are considering home purchases outside of the City of Toronto to avoid paying the Land Transfer Tax. This goes a long way in explaining the disproportionate decline in sales in the City versus surrounding regions."

Coconut Mango Non-Dairy "Ice Cream"

While ice cream offers one option for a delicious frozen treat, is it really ice cream you want? If you read the labels of many commercial "ice creams," dairy/cream components seem to be lower on the list of ingredients than cheaper artificial or 'natural' additives. The calorie-per-serving count of many dairy-based ice creams is often enough to make us rethink our craving.

It Summer! There is no need to deprive yourself of a frozen delight. Perhaps it is just time to consider a healthier frozen treat for the more sophisticated palette!
